The hidden Holy City of Mana, Wendel has stood for centuries as the spiritual center of the world, dedicated to preserving the tradition and legacy of Mana. A descendant of the great Sage Cibba of ages past, the noble spirited Janice is the one charged with Wendel's safety in the present day. It is almost solely by her power that Wendel eludes the efforts of the Empire to breach it as it did once 15 years ago, by way of a special shield that cuts off all contact with the outside world. Only when the legendary Gemma of the Mana Family and her Knight wielding the Mana Sword appear, will the way be opened for them to learn about their heavy destiny, as have all who have gone before. And time is running out in Janice's fated search. For if the world is without a Tree for much longer, the God Beasts will surly arise once more... and everything that we know will be lost.

Janice's assistant, Belguteii is the second-in-command in the Order of Light's heirarchy, and a member of the Sages Three. It is his holy duty, passed on from the forefathers, to preserve and record the Annals of Mana. He is normally quite reserved and a bit of a bookworm, prizing knowledge and history perhaps even more than events in the present day. However, recently he has become much more active in Wendelian politics, urging Janice to step up her efforts in the search for the child of Gemma. Though his words and concerns are justified, some people also have noticed that there is a dark intensity in his eyes these days...

Just below Belguteii in authority, the mysterious and aloof Luka is the eldest member of the Sages Three. It is not known exactly what role as a Mana Knight she played in the first Mana Fortress War, but she is said to have been watching over the area of Gaia's Navel for over 250 years, upholding the Order of Light's teachings & encouraging learning and devotion to Mana in all whom she meets. Luka has never been seen leaving the walls of the Water Palace, rather sending her understudies such as Rahne on various missions for her, leading some to believe this secretive woman has perhaps found the legendary "Fountain of Youth" in its ancient halls. The mercenary Keylia and her seem to be a little more than just acquaintances...

The most distant of the Sages Three, the reptilian wiseman Joch makes his residence in a small cave in the tall crags of the Mandalian mountains. Joch is grumpy and a well known recluse, and visitors coming for guidance are often turned away by his "disciple" Jehk... though in actuality this is merely an illusion he uses to fool those that seek his knowledge for self-gain or trival matters. In recent years Joch's health has been deteriorating rapidly, and he barely has time to meet with anyone, serious or no. Though he sent his only disciple Rahne away to study abroad with Luka, the real reason for this could lie in a realization of his own mortality...

Specially trained warriors, the Gemma Knights devote thier lives wholeheartedly to serving the Order and protecting Mana's legacy. However, they are far from invincible. 15 years ago, Wendel's walls were breached in a surprise attack by Julius XIV, after Janice's repeated attempts at convincing him to cooperate in the search for the Gemma and redeem the mistakes of the past. Though the Empire's forces were eventually driven off, the Gemma Knight Brigade suffered severe losses as well, prompting Janice to renew the ancient Barrier enchantment around Wendel. However, some were disillusioned with their positions, and fled the city to other parts of the world before the spell was completed. The greatest loss was the powerful former Leaders Adrian and Chira Fletcher, whose lineage traces back to a hero of the ancient Mana Vandole Conflict, Bogard Fletcher.
Regan and Megan arose several years after this incident, left holding the reins of the remaining Knights. Though worthy leaders who would gladly die together in defending Wendel, the Anselma siblings' skill has yet to be tested on the battlefield. If the holy city is again threatened, will they be able to defend it as their predecessors did? |
