Trune McVrey
Heretical Hylan Student
Trune
Vitals:
Age: 16 (nearing 17)
Homeland/town: Hylan Academy
Weapon: Ceremonial Knives (Athames)

Appearance:
Trune stands at about 6'1, and has a very lanky frame. His attire is simple, with as little fuss as possible. His usual attire consists of a blue shirt worn untucked over blue jeans, rugged brown traveling boots, and a belt. He usually wears a durable traveler’s vest over his shirt, but he also has a large, oversized brown coat, which was one of the last items he received from his estranged parents before he left the academy. His look is usually toped off with heavy duty gloves, and a large satchel that he usually drapes over his shoulder. This satchel holds all of his possessions; so obviously, it has a very high value for him.

Although he does have a rugged look, he actually is cute for his age. He has black hair, and light brown eyes. Because he’s spent much of his time in captivity he’s rather pale and thin, and at times has a rather…unkempt appearance thanks to his current lifestyle. It’s not enough to make him a societal outcast, but he can look a bit dusty and weather-worn.

Personality:
Despite the cliché-ness of the statement, Trune is definitely a ‘diamond in the rough’ type of guy. He’s somewhat of a smart-aleck who does what he wants and says what he wants, and if someone doesn’t like it…generally he won’t really give a flying floo… especially if he barely knows you. While he isn’t this way all of the time, he’s very abrasive and anti-social as of late because he’s bitter over some of the events life has handed him. While he won’t admit it to anyone, he’s very hurt over his friend’s betrayal and feels that he’ll only get burned again if he gets too close to anyone. So Trune has become especially crass because it’s a defensive mechanism to mask his hurt.

However, get past the defensive front Trune has put up to protect himself and you’ll find that Trune is actually a pretty decent guy. He’s intelligent and can be witty on occasion, and tries to help out anyone who will take the time to actually be his friend. Trune is a realist, and sometimes because of this viewpoint he can be a tad cynical. He wants to believe that most things will work out for the best, but he's seen the direction his life has taken and what really goes on behind closed doors and alleyways, and knows that they usually don't. In many ways, Trune wishes to go back to the days when he could just be a kid and not have to worry about his beliefs or if he’ll live to see tomorrow. Trune doesn't like to see other people get burned like he did though, and tries to help out the more innocent or 'little guy' type of people (Once they've made that step to becoming his friend that is.). Trune especially likes kids though, and for some reason, kids seem to get along well with him. So far, no child has burned him yet. What Trune really needs is companionship and normalcy in his life, though he doesn’t quite realize that yet.

Strangely, Trune has a tendency to be somewhat paranoid. While one could come to the conclusion that being labeled a heretic could do such a thing to a person, Trune has always been this way, and he’s never been able to explain why. He often has feelings of inadequacy, uncertainty and that he will fail the people he cares about. Trune is fairly good at keeping this under wraps, but sometimes his façade cracks and it’s blatantly obvious. Trune knows he has this problem and does his best to keep it to himself because, first off – angstheads suck, and secondly – mental institutions suck more.

Trune has knowledge about magic and magical lore (quite a bit of it, actually – this is where he excels most), likes history, and surprisingly is a literature buff. Trune does have some interests outside of magic and book-learning, though. He’s actually a decent musician. Trune unfortunately can’t sing to save his life, but he has shown great talent in playing instruments, especially guitar. He actually owns and carries around an old guitar that belonged to his father. It’s one of the ways he calms his nerves.

Motivation:
Trune’s original motivation was to swipe a certain treasure of Bree’s in order to prove his Elementalism theory, but obviously, that plan went to pot. Now that Trune is sitting in Bree’s dungeons, his motivations have sunk to being almost non-existent. While he’d love to find some way prove his theory and put Bree in her place…things are looking pretty hopeless. He’s going through a dark spot in his life and needs something to push him onward. Hopefully, that ‘something’ will come sooner rather than later.

Background:
Nineteen years ago when the world changed, lives were turned upside down…and some people’s lives were changed for the better. Zechariah McVrey was one of those people whose lives changed for the better. Originally just a young nobody in old Vane’s crusty magic ranks, he suddenly found himself thrust into a new frontier with nothing but his intelligence and know-how—quite an asset in a world where most of the older mages were lost. Naturally ambitious, he very much supported Johnathan Hylan’s creation of a magic academy; eventually becoming a professor himself due to his knack of will-force healing. While his ambition is rather obvious and he’s a bit of a jerk to boot, the academy puts up with him because he’s an excellent teacher. Soon after he arrived he married, and three years after his arrival at the Hylan Academy Trune was born.

For most of his young life, the academy was all that Trune was familiar with. Trune’s father, feeling that his son should follow in his footsteps, pushed Trune at an early age through many magic courses. Although Trune liked learning magic, he was always resentful that his father pushed him so hard into areas of magic that he wasn’t very interested in, and they never really got along. His mother didn't help matters much, being that she was one of those spineless types of wives that didn't really stand up to her husband’s verbal abuse and badgering. Despite this though, Trune got along with his mother much better than he did with his father.

Trune grew up in a normal fashion. He was decently popular, had friends and performed well in school, if only to appease his father. It was roughly a year ago that the trouble started…

When Trune was just about to turn sixteen, he enrolled in a class with a girl who he knew as an acquaintance before – Mikayla Ronoke. Charming, witty, and pretty dang gorgeous, many boys were quite taken with her. Trune was no exception. Also present in his class was a newcomer to the academy, Heath Elwood. Slightly chubby and sweetly earnest, Heath was looking for a friend in a place that was downright foreign to him.

In one of the classes, the topic of the Blue Star’s elementals came up. According to the teacher, mages believed that the elements are simply natural forces which people use magic to control. However, the teacher went on to explain that the nature of magic has changed so much that elemental spell-casting has gone out of favor compared to will-force and healing techniques. Mikayla, however, disagreed with the teacher’s hypothesis. She felt that not only were the elements present and workable in magic, but she felt that perhaps the elements were more than just intimate objects. Perhaps they had actual sentiency. Neither Trune nor Heath agreed, but they did note that Mikayla's observation had some merit, at least in terms of the elements being useful in magic practice. Some of the students overheard Mikayla’s conversation, and felt that she was a crazy nut. Her theory had no proof. So, Mikayla was given the challenge to actually find proof that the elementals were actual 'beings' of sorts. Partially out of boredom, partially out of curiosity, and partly (in Trune’s case) to the call of something a bit deeper in his...uh...pants…Trune and Heath decided to help.

For the most part, they did it in secret, and they had the means to do it. Since Trune's father had high connections, he was able to get into some of his father's tomes from school and research, along with going into the Library's more 'closed' off and 'selective' spaces, simply saying it was for his father's work. Mikayla, having the charisma, was the one who pretty much drove the small group, and Heath, being the newbie, latched onto the two because he wanted to belong. Eventually, the trio began to slowly realize, based on their research, that Mikayla may have been right all along. The simple dare turned out to be an obsession of theirs, for they felt they were on to something big. They weren’t naïve, though. They realized that unless they had a smoking gun of proof, they would be deemed as freaks, or even worse, heretics. Three months ago, Trune found that smoking gun.

He discovered that the current (and only) mayor of New Meribia, Bree, always carried with her a strange sort of staff. Many rumors were whispered about it – some believed it just to be a trinket, while others believed it was a magical staff that could tap into the core of the elements themselves. Upon hearing (and reading about) these rumors, the kids thought of a daring plan – They would travel to New Meribia and simply ‘borrow’ the staff until their theory was undoubtedly proven, hopefully over the course of a day or two. They then would put it back where they found it, and no one would be the wiser. Of course, in their zeal to prove it all and not be failures, they didn’t think of the fact that their plan was horribly, undeniably stupid.

Suffice to say, the trio sneaked into Bree’s mansion and found the room where the staff lay. Trune had his hand on the staff, felt a strange rush of power come from it, and then was promptly caught red-handed by none other than Bree and her entourage of female guards.

The group was obviously afraid, but they figured the worst that would happen to them was that they’d be kicked out of the academy, or perhaps serve a short jail time. Bree had different plans. Bree began to make outlandish claims – saying that the children were hell-bent of sabotaging her. They intended to kill her and steal all of her riches and possessions, and should be put to death for their crimes. Trune and Heath tried to plead their case, that they were really just students trying to prove a theory, and perhaps SNEAKING into her mansion wasn’t the wisest choice, but they had good intentions.

Things were going well…until Mikayla, in an attempt to save herself, ‘confessed’ to Bree that what she said was true, and she was just about to report it to Bree herself. She was dragged along against her will by these two ‘savages’. Bree believed her, despite the boys’ protests (and obvious hurt and anger) and threw them into the dungeons. To everyone’s amazement (and confusion), she offered Mikayla a position in her guard, which she accepted.

To this day, Trune still sits in a dark, solitary jail cell. He’s unsure of the reason why he’s not been executed yet, but the daily drudgery and tortures he’s endured make him wish sometimes that it’d end. He’s unsure of what has happened to Heath, and the fires of his crush have quickly turned to burning hatred for Mikayla. However, he still feels that the theory of ‘Elementalism’ is right, and he wishes that somehow he could prove it.

Perhaps he’ll get the chance after all…
