Vitals:
Tanan is a young member of the Hylan Academy's faculty, a junior professor who
specializes in finding a way to harness the chaotic flow of forces in the world
around him. He initially studied the art of healing before stumbling onto his
rather unorthodox way of harnessing magic. He is also loosely associated, though
not an actual member of the archeology department, occasionally going out on
expeditions to various nearby ruins. He first began tagging along on trips as a
student, and now takes occasional breaks from teaching to explore any nearby
finds. He doesn't tend to stray too far from the academy though, often preferring
to spend time at home.
Tanan was born in the academy town shortly after its founding and has lived there
all his life. Newly 'graduated' and given a job as a member of the academy staff,
Tanan is still on friendly terms with a number of the older students and his
former classmates, and is gaining acceptance with the other teachers. There is,
however, a little bit of wariness regarding his choice of field of study and a few
of the other professors believe he might be going a little too far. Those in charge
of the academy haved decided to support his studies, so aside from the occasional
reminder to be careful or casual mention that his pursuits might be better spent
furthering the healing arts, he is largely either left alone about what he's doing.
He has attracted a few students interest in what he's doing, and is beginning to
gain a reputation as someone to bounce unusual ideas off of.
A few of the more liberal professors are known to inquire as to the results of his
experiments and studies from time to time, no doubt driven by a sort of curious
wondering as to how far he'll be allowed to go. No one is totally sure exactly how
he stumbled on his technique of magic. For the most part the new style of magic is
an imposition of order by the human will, focusing the power of the individual to
perform a specific task regardless of the conditions. Tanan also claims that in
addition to these specific acts of will, almost any effect is possible with the
right nudge of will at the right time and that an unfocused nudge can cause almost
anything.
Tanan has had only moderate success in attempts to teach others to see things in
this way, with some students grasping the execution of the random nudge but almost
no one understanding how he means to pick the moment. More baffling is that he
asserts that a moment can be seized and remembered for later use, once it's found
to begin with. Apparently this works, but not only can Tanan not explain exactly
how he does it, he can't replicate it at will. He teaches that the perfect moment
has to arrive first to been seen and remembered, but once it has been used the
magic can't be repeated until a new moment comes along. There's some debate as to
whether this is the real explination, or Tanan is just making up something that
sounds good because he doesn't understand it either. The lack of enthusiasm for
his classes leaves him with a lot of time between helping to teach the healers of
the next generation and the occasional journey into the countryside.
Physically, Tanan is somewhat imposing for a mage. Although only of average
height, he is built solidly, and is in good condition from the training he does
with the sword to help protect him during potentially dangerous travels outside
the academy proper. He has light brown hair and brown eyes, and his facial
features are somewhat unremarkable. While not unattractive, he isn't the type to
draw stares on the streets either.
Tanan doesn't have many close friends, instead surrounding himself with a number
of casual acquaintances. This could be because he's regarded as a little odd by
many, or possibly due to the fact that some people find him to be very judgemental.
He freely admits his own flaws, but is also inclined to point out those of others,
or at least tsk disapprovingly at times. For the most part, though, his students
and acquaintences find him cheerful if a little quiet at times. They may regard him
as being a little odd, but that's hardly unusual in the walls of the academy town.
